What is a Parish Meeting?
Every English Parish must have a Parish Meeting (Local Government Act 1972, s13(1)).
This meeting consists of the local government electors registered for the area for which it is held i.e. all those who have a right to vote in Alford. It can be convened by the Town Council Chairman, two Town Councillors or six electors for the area for which it is to be held. The meeting must be held each year between 1st March and 1st June (incl.) and must be after 6pm in the evening!
So that’s the law…..what happens in practice?
What is Alford’s Annual Parish Meeting Like?
Historically Alford’s Annual Parish Meeting has been organised by Alford Town Council and held in May. It has been an opportunity for the Town Council to report on their activities during the year. It has also been an opportunity for residents to ask questions and provide feedback.
The Town Council advertises the meeting on the notice boards and website and in the Quarterly Newsletter.
When is the Next Meeting?
The next Annual Parish Meeting will be on Friday 20th May 2016 at 7pm in the Corn Exchange, Market Place, Alford
