Everybody Needs Good Neighbours

During this prolonged period of cold weather it is important that everyone in the community looks out for those people that might need extra help and support.

That's the message from David Powell, speaking as head of emergency planning for the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum.

He said:"At the moment, the Met Office is predicting the current low temperatures may continue for at least 10 days and we have growing concerns for the more vulnerable people in Lincolnshire. We are particularly concerned about people not known to us as registered users of our services.

"During this prolonged period of cold weather it is important that everyone in the community looks out for those people that might need extra help and support. At the moment, the Met Office is predicting that it will remain very cold with further snow showers or longer spells of snow likely almost anywhere across the UK. Overnight frosts and severe frosts are also expected."

If people need more than good neighbourly help, Lincolnshire County Council have activated a single non-emergency telephone number for people to call for advice and support if they need urgent assistance at this time. The number to call is 01522 782189.

This phone number is only for serious concerns about a person's welfare as a result of them not being able to get out of their homes to buy food, replace medication or if they are without fuel supplies.

If members of the public call this number their needs will be assessed and they will be directed to the most appropriate public or voluntary sector partner.

David Powell added:"In the first place I would ask everyone to be a good neighbour. If you are in urgent need ring the dedicated helpline number as a safety net and if there is a risk to life and a genuine emergency please ring 999".
