Tom Childs Community Award 2009



The Tom Childs’ Memorial Award lunch and Ceremony on Wednesday 1st July 2009, in the Officers’ Mess Prince William of Gloucester Barracks and was awarded to Mrs Joan Briggs of 17, Woburn Drive, Grantham; for her unstinting support to her neighbours and fund raising efforts for cancer charities.  Joan calls her neighbours ‘the old ladies’, even though most of them are younger than her 86 years.  Mrs Briggs was nominated by her daughter Mrs Lynda Townsend who said, “her mother was a wonderful woman and enjoyed looking after her neighbours; she regularly helps out with their shopping and household chores and also runs the occasional fund raising event for cancer charities, producing teas and cakes and donating the majority of the prizes for the raffles herself; raising between £200 and £300 each time”.  The Chairman of the Award Committee, Major Dennis Hannant said that “Mrs Briggs was an example to us all and if you wrote down all the characteristics that you would want in a good grandmother, mother or best friend, Joan would fit the bill and more”.  As well as attending the Award lunch, Mrs Briggs received a framed certificate and a cheque for £200 towards Cancer Research ?   Details of the Award for 2010 and a Nominations Proforma is available from the Parish Clerk, who can be contacted on 07929 321426 or  Nominations must be received by the Parish Clerk by 1st May 2010.  The successful nominees will be informed after 15th May 2010 and will be presented their award at the Awards Ceremony lunch in June 2010.  All submissions and queries regarding the Tom Child’s Memorial Award should be directedto the Parish Clerk, Mr Peter Armstrong.
