Bob 'Robert' Rawson

enlisted February 1915

Although he was christened Bob he came to use the name Robert.

He was born at Southorpe on 14th June 1888, the 9th of 10 children of Henry (a labourer) and Jane (nee Hiles).  His parents were both from Kirton Lindsey and lived there briefly after their marriage in 1873.  By 1881 they had settled at Moat Houses, Southorpe.  Their other children were George Frederick, Anne ('Annie'), Henry Stow, Ada, Tom, Fred, Albert, Polly and Walter.

Some time before 1901 they had moved to live in 3 rooms at Chapel Lane, Northorpe.  Over the years Henry had been a shepherd, then a horseman, had other jobs on farms and by his 60th birthday he was a general labourer.

Bob enlisted in early 1915 and may have been 16877 Private Robert Rawson of the Lincolnshire Regiment.  A decade after the war ended this man had not asked for his medals so, under King's Regulations, they were broken.

In 1919 Bob married Mable Waring in the Worksop registration district.  It is probable they did not have children.

He lived until 1973 when he died aged 85 in the Rother Valley.  Mabel died 2 years later aged 84 in the Rotherham registration district.

His brother Albert also served and is listed on the monument.
