Unknown people

Can you put a name to any of these people?

Post mill picture 671 from L. Snowden

A man is holding the reins of a horse which stands in the shafts of a gig.  In the background is the working Post Mill and potatoes are growing by the side of the road.

The reverse of the picture says:-
'With best wishes for a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year, from J.H. Rathbone'

John Henry Rathbone was born in Manchester in 1866 and married 22 year old Sarah Ellen Holmes in 1892 at St. Peter's Church.

Sarah was the daughter of a Northorpe farm labourer who presumably moved to find work since she was born at Old Frodingham.  By the age of 10 she was back in Northorpe and, as a dressmaker, came to live on High Street, Scotter with her widowed mother Mary Ann who worked as a cook.

The 1901 census shows John and Sarah Rathbone living at Droylsden, Lancashire with their two children.  He is listed as the 'secretary to a lads club'.

It is not known who these people are but they may have a Johnson or Rennison connection.

unknown officer

picture AL14 from Allen Limb

This officer is thought to have been a relation of Mrs Ellen Harrison of Cleatham.

unknown soldier

picture UGW6 from David Capes

This picture was in David Cape's slide collection which he put together over many years.

The man might well be one of those listed on the War Memorial who served in and survived the Great War.

His jacket seems to indicate he was not an officer.

unknown woman

Suggestions to of the identity of this lady have been put forward in the past but no-one really seems to know.

She might have been:-

Mrs Johnson (grandmother of Harry)

Mrs Richardson (mother of Bill)

or someone else entirely
