West Deeping Heritage Group. Tuesday 20th February WDVH 7.00pm for 7.30pm Robert Beasley on The Lower Welland Valley Villages. “A topographical story of their development from Bronze Age to Enclosure”. We live in fortunate times.  Aerial photography was perfected just in time to catch images of topographical features now lost under sprawling development, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) allow us to interpret those images.  This talk will show how the river Welland has changed course over millennia and how this has affected the positioning and development of the villages to the north of Peterborough.  16th C. maps transcribed to Ordnance Survey grids will show how farmers’ flood defences can still be found on the ground today and will suggest how Richard De Rulos diverted the Welland and why the Romans were frightened of lumps.

The Christmas Tree Festival.  A big thank you to everyone who made the St Andrew’s Christmas Tree Festival such a great success. 30 trees were decorated over the first weekend in December and they were admired by more than 150 visitors during the display event on 16th December and by more than 50 people who enjoyed the Carol Service on the Sunday. The magnificent main tree was a centrepiece, donated again this year by Graham & Glenn at The Granary. Fittingly, more than 100 memory stars were hung on the tree to remember those special to us. We made just over £700 from the event, which will go towards the project to install a new toilet and servery in St Andrew’s Church. Some photos are on the Parish Website under St Andrew’s Church Christmas Tree Festival.
