The last local shop in Castle Bytham closed in December 2013, closely followed by the last shop in Little Bytham.  A "Community Group" quickly formed and identified that the best model for rural villages to restore this essential service was the Community Shop, owned and operated by the community it serves.  With the assistance of the Plunkett Foundation, access to legal advice, case studies and networking with similar projects across the UK the Bythams Community Shop Ltd was formed and fund raising began.

Following the recommendations of the Castle Bytham Parish Plan and the example of many other community shops, a small cafe was added to the project to make the venue a genuine "community hub" for a range of activities and a source of information.

The Shop Committee took possession of land on the old quarry on Station Road and by late in 2019 had sufficient funds to begin building work, following the approval of its Planning Application in Aug 2019.
